BLACK HOLE SPIN REVEALED FIRST TIME...

Astronomers have made the first reliable measurement of a supermassive black hole's spin, showcasing a technique that could help unravel the mysteries of these monsters' growth and evolution.
The enormous black hole at the center of the spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is spinning about 84 percent as fast as Einstein's general theory of relativity allows it to, researchers determined. The find demonstrates that at least some supermassive black holes are rotating rapidly — a claim previous studies had hinted at but failed to confirm.
"It's the first time that we can really say that black holes are spinning," study co-author Fiona Harrison, of Caltech in Pasadena.

Supermassive black holes are almost incomprehensibly huge, with some containing 10 billion or more times the mass of our sun. Scientists think one lurks at the heart of most, if not all, galaxies.
NGC 1365, located about 56 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Fornax, does indeed harbor a gigantic black hole — one as massive as several million suns. And this behemoth is blasting out enormous quantities of energy as it gobbles up gas and other nearby matter, making it an intriguing target for astronomers.
In the new study, researchers analyzed observations two X-ray space telescopes — the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton observatory and NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) — made of NGC 1365 in July 2012.
By zeroing in on high-energy light emitted by iron atoms, the telescopes were able to trace the motion of the flat, rotating accretion disk that circles NGC 1365's black hole and funnels gas and dust into its greedy maw.
Astronomers found that the emissions are strongly distorted, suggesting that the inner edge of the accretion disk may be quite close to the black hole — close enough for gravitational effects to wreak havoc with the X-rays streaming from the disk. This in turn implies a rapidly rotating black hole, since general relativity states that the faster a black hole is spinning, the closer its disk can come to it, Harrison said.
But that's just one interpretation. Another holds that such distortion, which has been observed in accretion disk emissions before, could be caused by clouds of gas that hang between a supermassive black hole and the telescopes observing it. [The Strangest Black Holes in the Universe]

RUBY 2.O RELEASE



The Ruby community has just announced the first stable release of Ruby 2.0, exactly twenty years to the day since Ruby creator Yukihiro Matsumoto first created the language on February 26, 1993.
Ruby 2.0.0-p0, as the release is formally known, represents the first major revision of the language since Ruby 1.9 was released in December 2007.
The most recent entry in the 1.9 line, Ruby 1.9.3, was released on October 31, 2011. Although the full list of changes since Ruby 1.9.3 is fairly long, Ruby 2.0 is essentially an incremental release, one that maintains nearly full backward compatibility with the previous version.
According to the language's maintainers, most developers today will find it much easier to migrate from Ruby 1.9 to Ruby 2.0 than previous versions.
Among the language changes in the new release are the ability to pass arguments to methods as named keywords; new syntax that makes it easier to create arrays of symbols; and Module prepend, a way to allow methods loaded from a module to override those in a specific class.
The default character encoding for Ruby scripts has been changed from US-ASCII to UTF-8, which can cause issues with some older scripts but it still eliminates the need to use magic comments to declare UTF-8 encoding in modern programs.
Refinements, another new feature that improves how modules can be used to extend core classes among the Ruby community – is present in Ruby 2.0, but it's still considered experimental. Its specification may yet change in future releases, so it's not recommended for everyday use.
Changes to the Ruby core libraries in v. 2.0 include a new, more powerful regular expression engine; a new API for asynchronous exception handling; and "lazy" methods for the Enumerator and Range classes and the Enumerable module that delay evaluation of expressions until their values are needed.
A number of optimizations have been made to the Ruby runtime that improve performance. In particular, Ruby on Rails startup times have been much improved. Shortly after today's announcement, the Rails team confirmed that Rails 3.2.x is already compatible with Ruby 2.0. In addition, Ruby 2.0.0 now supports run-time debugging of production code using DTrace.
Unlike Ruby 1.9, Ruby 2.0 is considered a stable release and current Ruby 1.9.3 programmers are encouraged to start using it for their production code.
As the release notes state, "Ruby 2.0 is ready for practical use, and will absolutely improve your Ruby life." The new version is available for download from the official Ruby website and the source code is also available via Github.

Russian Meteor Fallout: What to Do Next Time?

This month's meteor detonation above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk and Earth's close shave with asteroid 2012 DA14 have kick-started conversations on lessons learned and what steps can be taken to prevent space rock impacts in the future.
One positive action item was actually in place prior to the dual asteroid events of Feb. 15: a new Memorandum of Agreement between the Air, Space, and Cyberspace Operations Directorate of the Air Force Space Command and NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

That document, which was signed on Jan. 18 of this year, spells out specifics for the public release of meteor data from sources such as high-flying, hush-hush U.S. government space sensors.

The recent Russian meteor event occurred after completion of the newly signed agreement and data on the recent Chelyabinsk event had been released for scientific analysis, SPACE.com has been informed by NASA and the U.S. Air Force.

A FLOWER OF GIGANTIC JET OVR THE CHINA SPACE


The gigantic jet took place in eastern China on Aug. 12, 2010 — the farthest a ground-based one has ever been observed from the equator, according to the research team.
Previous jets were mainly seen in tropical or subtropical regions, but this one took place around 35 degrees latitude, about the same as the southern part of Tennessee in the United States.

"This is the first report from mainland China," lead researcher Jing Yang, an atmospheric scientist with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, told OurAmazingPlanet. The results were recently published in the Chinese Science Bulletin.
Researchers got a good look at the storm using a variety of tools, including Doppler radar data and weather pictures in the infrared band of radiation.
The gigantic jet peaked at about 55 miles (89 kilometers) above the ground, far above the cloudtops that were measured with Doppler radar at an altitude of 11 miles (17 km).

A cross-platform approach makes sense with mobile app development

When you're developing mission critical mobile apps, cross-platform development is important, and will continue to be so until a day comes when everyone uses the same platform. Will it be iOS, Android, HTML5, Windows or something else? Nobody knows yet, but the ramifications are the same.
For now, the world is multi- platform, and unless you can afford to ignore all platforms but one, or to develop independent projects for each platform, some kind of cross-platform approach makes sense.
There are essentially two approaches to cross-platform mobile apps. You can either use an embedded browser control and write a web app wrapped up as a native app, as in Adobe PhoneGap/Cordova or the similar approach taken by Sencha, or you can use a cross-platform tool that creates native apps, such as Xamarin Studio, Appcelerator Titanium, or Embarcardero.
But within the second category though, there is diversity. In particular, apps vary concerning the extent to which they abstract the user interface.
But here's the trade-off-- If you design your cross-platform framework to include user interface widgets, like labels, buttons, grids and menus, then you can have your application work almost the same way on every platform. You can also have tools that build the user interface once for all the platforms.
This is a big win in terms of coding effort. If the framework is well implemented, it will still adopt some of the characteristics native to each platform so that it looks more or less native.
Some tools do this by drawing their own controls. Embroiderer is in this category. Another approach is to use native controls where possible, in other words, to call the API that shows a button, rather than drawing the button with the graphics API, but to use custom drawing where necessary, even sometimes implementing a control from one platform on another.
The downside is that because those controls are not in fact native, there will be some differences, perhaps obvious, perhaps subtle.
Furthermore, if you're sharing the user interface design across all platforms, it's hard to make your design feel equally right in all cases.
To be sure, you might be better off to take the approach adopted by most games, using a design that is distinctive to your app and make a virtue of its consistency across platforms, even though it doesn't have the native look and feel on any platform.
But Xamarin Studio on the other hand makes no attempt to provide a shared GUI framework. Xamarin CEO Nat Friedman says “We don’t try to provide a user interface abstraction layer that works across all platforms. We think that’s a bad approach that leads to the lowest common denominator (LCD) user interfaces.
The LCD in maths is the lowest number into which a specific group of numbers divide exactly. In cross-platform app development, what you should strive for is the highest common intersection-- ie, to make available all the features common to each platform.
However, the downside to this is the that effort involved in maintaining two or more user interface designs for your app. This is an old debate, but one that must be addressed nevertheless. One of the reasons IBM created Eclipse was a disagreement with Sun Micro systems over the best way to design a cross-platform user interface framework.
Sun’s Swing framework, derived from Netscape’s Internet Foundation Classes first released in 1996, takes the custom-drawn approach, which is why Swing apps always look like Swing apps (even if you apply the “Windows” look and feel). A team from IBM, some originally from Object Technology International which was a company acquired by IBM, believed it was better to wrap native controls with a Java abstraction layer, created S WT (Standard Widget Toolkit) to do that, and used it to build Eclipse.
Some are wary of tool kits which rely heavily on custom-drawn controls rather than native controls. On the other hand, X amarin Studio is so far in the other direction that it removes some of the benefit of a cross-platform framework.
Some are now predicting that X amarin will come up with its own GUI abstraction framework in the near future, along the lines of S WT. It's a compromise, but one which delivers a lot of value to app developers who want to create cross-platform apps with the maximum amount of shared code.

NASA WILL REVEAL ABOUT BLACK HOLE FINDINGS

NASA will reveal new findings about black holes during a news conference Wednesday (Feb. 27).
The news conference, which starts at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) Wednesday, will relay results based primarily on observations made by two X-ray space telescopes: NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton observatory, NASA officials said. The scientists participating in the briefing are:

  • Fiona Harrison, NuSTAR principal investigator at Caltech in Pasadena
  • Guido Risaliti, astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.
  • Arvind Parmar, head of Astrophysics and Fundamental Physics Missions Division, European Space Agency
NASA will stream audio of the teleconference, along with participants' visual aids, live at http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2. SPACE.com will carry the NASA feed here.
The $165 million NuSTAR observatory launched in June 2012, kicking off a planned two-year mission to study the universe in high-energy X-ray light. The telescope's observations should help scientists better understand galaxy formation, black hole growth and other phenomena, mission team members have said.
XMM-Newton is a grizzled space veteran by comparison. The telescope launched in December 1999 and has been probing X-ray emissions around the universe ever since.

The firm is now more focused on Galaxy note instead Galaxy Tab. Samsung said the launch of Galaxy note 8.0 will reignite the mid size Tablet category like Google’s 7 inch Nexus, ipad mini. As per a survey Samsung and Apple accounted for more than half of all the smart phones sale in the final quarter of 2012.

MARS IS NOT RED?

The Red Planet's signature color is only skin deep.
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity drilled 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) into a Red Planet outcrop called "John Klein" earlier this month, revealing rock that's decidedly gray rather than the familiar rusty orange of the Martian surface.
"We're sort of seeing a new coloration for Mars here, and it's an exciting one to us," Joel Hurowitz, sampling system scientist for Curiosity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., told reporters on Feb. 20.


Mars gets its red coloration from a surface layer of dust that has undergone a rusting process, during which iron was oxidized.
Curiosity's hammering drill allows scientists to peer beneath that dusty veneer for the first time ever, and the early views at John Klein — where the rover performed its first full-up drilling and sample-collection operation — are intriguing, rover team members said.
The gray powder Curiosity collected "may preserve some indication of what iron was doing in these samples without the effect of some later oxidative process that would've rusted the rocks into this orange color that is sort of typical of Mars," Hurowitz said.
Curiosity landed inside the Red Planet's huge Gale Crater last August, kicking off a two-year prime mission to determine whether the area could ever have supported microbial life. The 1-ton rover carries 10 different science instruments and 17 cameras, along with other tools such as its arm-mounted, rock-boring drill.
The drill was the last of Curiosity's gear to get vetted and tested on the Red Planet, and the rover team is thrilled that its first run went so smoothly.
"It's a real big turning point for us," said Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena.
Snagging rock powder from the depths of John Klein — which shows signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water — also cements Curiosity's place in the history books, rover team members said.
"This is the first time any robot, fixed or mobile, has drilled into a rock to collect a sample on Mars," said JPL's Louise Jandura, sample system chief engineer for Curiosity. "In fact, this is the first time any rover has drilled into a rock to collect a sample anywhere but on Earth."

BOILING PLASMA FROM SUN EMERGING OUT



A loop of superheated plasma far larger than Earth rain down on the solar surface in a dazzling video captured by a NASA sun-watching spacecraft.
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) watched as a medium-strength flare erupted from the sun on July 19, 2012. The blast also generated the enormous, shimmering plasma loops, which are an example of a phenomenon known as "coronal rain," agency officials said.

"Magnetic fields are invisible, but the charged plasma is forced to move along the lines, showing up brightly in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 Angstroms, and outlining the fields as it slowly falls back to the solar surface," they added.

The $850 million SDO spacecraft recently marked three years in space. It launched on Feb. 11, 2010, kicking off a five-year prime mission to provide incredibly detailed views of the sun, solar flares and other space weather events.
SDO has delivered thus far, capturing more than 100 million images of our star as of late last year. Some of the spacecraft's most memorable shots over the last year are released last week to celebrate the mission's birthday.
But SDO has done more than just shine a light on the sun. The spacecraft has also helped scientists better understand comets, especially "sungrazers" like Comet Lovejoy, which survived a death dive through the sun's corona in December 2011.
And scientists used SDO to learn more about Venus' atmosphere during the planet's "transit" across the sun's face, from Earth's perspective, in June of last year. The Venus transit transfixed skywatchers and researchers around the world, as the next one won't come until 2117.
SDO isn't the only spacecraft keeping tabs on the sun, which is currently in an active phase of its 11-year activity cycle, with a peak expected later this year. NASA's twin Stereo probes also provide daily views of our star, as does the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency.
